Inspiring Environmental Stewardship through Citizen Science

Who: 15-20 Freshmen, Sophomores, and/or Juniors with an interest in science and the environment

What: a citizen science project in collaboration with WVU and Friends of Deckers Creek focused on monitoring the water quality of Deckers creek and developing proposals for restoration projects aimed at improving the water quality of the creek.

    When: January 2019 – Spring 2020

Where: MHS, WVU campus, WV Botanical Gardens, Friends of Deckers Creek office, other locations within the Deckers Creek watershed (i.e. FIELD TRIPS!!!)

Why: gain experience with scientific field work and develop solutions to improve the water quality of Deckers creek

How: collect and analyze water samples from Deckers creek on a monthly basis; also, meet to develop a restoration project to improve the water quality of the creek


Additional note:

  • In conjunction with their citizen science activities, students will be part of a research study designed to allow greater understanding of the influence of participation in citizen science activities on students’ perceptions of the environment and environmental concerns.
