On January 17 and 18, Eastwood Elementary School hosted its first robotics competition with support from WV Robotics Alliance. On Saturday, 15 elementary and middle school teams travelled from across the state to participate in The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation’s (RECF) VEX IQ Robotics Competition. Teams compete in 3 challenges: Teamwork, Driving Skills, and Autonomous Coding. Eastwood’s 5th Grade team, the Bear Bots, Mon County’s only VEX IQ team, competed for the first time, earning themselves a tie for 3rd place in the Teamwork Challenge.
On Sunday, middle and high school teams from the tri-state area traveled to participate in RECF’s Aerial Drone Competition. Teams compete by flying their drones through a series of obstacles in an alliance challenge, a skills challenge, and an autonomous flight. Volunteer referees and judges, Chico Bakery, Eastwood PTO members, Taziki’s catering, and the Monongalia County Board of Education helped to make the event a success. Eastwood is hopeful to spread the passion for robotics education and competition across the county.
