West Virginia House of Delegates members Anitra Hamilton, Evan Hansen, and John Williams have provided $5,580 in state funding to support the expansion of elementary and middle school competitive robotics teams in Monongalia County.  The funds were secured through a Local Economic Development Assistance Grant to the Fairmont State University Science and Technology Education Resource Center (SciTech ERC).

This exciting project was inspired by Eastwood Elementary School STEM Den teacher, Karen Davis and her RECF Engage Robotics Team, at the Mon County Student Showcase last April.  â€śThe student’s presentation impressed me so much that I reached out to Delegates Hamilton and Williams to coordinate funding to expand the number of robotics teams in Mon County Schools,” said Delegate Hansen. Both Delegates were enthusiastic to support this project, "I am honored to be able to assist in the expansion of competitive robotics teams in elementary and middle schools. I hope this expansion creates space to be innovative and driven in competition!” said Delegate Anitra Hamilton.

Bear Bots Coach, Karen Davis reflected, "The RECF Engage Robotics Competition is a challenge with no right answer providing a catalyst for 21st century learning skills: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication. I see students develop a resilient mindset with their setbacks and team cooperation under pressure. But the best part is the confidence and leadership skills they develop with successes.”  The Fairmont State SciTech ERC will take the lead for coordinating workshops and purchasing the supplies for the new teams.  â€śThe SciTech ERC provides free trainings for coaches, supports dozens of events across the state, as well as hosts the state robotics championships,” said STEM Outreach Specialist Dr. Todd Ensign. “We are excited to partner with elementary and middle schools across Monongalia County to build a progression of after-school robotics programs for students to develop their interest, knowledge and enthusiasm for STEM degrees and careers.”
